When I consider the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; what is man, that You are mindful of him? And the son of man that You visited him?  Psalm 8:3

Reflecting once again on faith that believes in a “much more” God, I realize how small I think God is sometimes, even though I never verbally express it. My anxiety indicates that I feel like I’m on my own and God will not come through for me. I have to figure out life for myself. And sometimes when I do think of God, I think of Him as grudgingly doling out what I need just to survive. I was struck by what Hannah Whithall Smith says of these verses in Psalms 8:

“Man so puny, so insignificant, of so little account when compared to the great, wide universe, what is he, we ask, that God should care for him? And yet God declares that He does care for him, and that He even cares for him much more than He cares for the universe. Much more. So that every thought of anxiety about ourselves must be immediately crushed with the common-sense reflection that, since we are not so foolish as to be anxious about the universe, we must not be so much more foolish as to be anxious about ourselves.”

This made me laugh! Let’s see, when is the last time I was filled with anxiety that the earth might not rotate today? Or that gravity would fail and we would all fly off the earth? Did I stay up last night to double-check that the stars would come out or the sun would rise? No! God has been doing this for thousands of years without any help or supervision or nagging from me. He has been very competently managing the Universe. The Universe!! But I think He can’t manage my stuff? My circumstances? My stack of bills or relationship issues?

Look around. The Universe is not just adequate; it is stunning! How lavishly our Father provides! What abundance! He does things in a magnificent way! Don’t fall into the trap of thinking He can scarcely provide for you. Haddon Robinson wrote: “With God the calf is always the fatted calf; the robe is always the best robe; the joy is unspeakable; and the peace passes all understanding. There is no grudging in God’s goodness. He does not measure it out by drops. It comes to us in floods. If we would recognize the lavish abundance of His gifts, what a difference it would make in our lives.”

*What would it look like in your life to live believing in a “much more” God?

Most High God, I worship You as the greatest, most awesome of all beings—more powerful than anything on earth. You are high above any hindrance or adversary or problem in my life right now.  For everything I need, what a privilege to go right to The Top—to the supreme Authority, the highest Ruler, who is all-powerful and all-loving. Thank You that You deeply care about me and love me with a perfect love. I rest in Your ability to do much more than I can ask or think. Amen.
